SMART SARAJEVO INITIATIVE - PILOT PROJECTS
Implementer: “Services and Solutions” Ltd.
Brief description: The project has enabled the purchase of “smart” waste bins that compress the waste and optimize waste collection. The smart waste bins have been deployed in several locations in the Municipality of Stari Grad. According to the “RAD” public enterprise responsible for public waste management in Canton Sarajevo, , for a period of 6 months, the frequency of waste collection from these locations went down from 336 to 71. As a result from the real-time digital tracking system, the waste management utility company can see if the bin is full , as well as receive notification when it is necessary to collect the waste from the bins. For the time being, no scaling up of this solution is in place.

Brief description: The project aims to test the application of high-occupancy road lane to speed up and optimise traffic in one location in the city. It plans to test, for a period of several weeks, the principle of “if 3 and more people are in one vehicle, this vehicle can use a “fast-lane”, which will reduce the number of single-driver vehicles and the number of vehicles, which will in turn reduce traffic congestions and decrease air pollution caused by traffic. The project is implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Transport of Sarajevo Canton, the Directorate for Roads of Sarajevo Canton and the Ministry of Interior of Canton Sarajevo.

Brief description: The smart urban planning tool is a numerical simulation of airflow and is based on computational fluid dynamics. The software enables the dynamic calculation of air currents and the dispersion of pollutants in space and time in real orography. It includes details of urban amenities in critical meteorological conditions - such as temperature inversions or wind-free situations, the simulations show how urban amenities affect airflow and pollutant concentrations in selected locations in Sarajevo.

Brief description: Car sharing system enabled through a mobile application. The “BiBi” application has been developed and launched on Google Play store in March 2020, just when the COVID-19 pandemic started. This prevented the use and promotion of the car-share solution, due to the health risks it may bring to users who share vehicle, as well as in compliance with the epidemiologic measures. Since then, as the COVID-19 pandemic had several waves, the application is not in active use. At present, UNDP is in contact with the implementing team, to re-invigorate the launch of the application, given that the COVID-19 epidemiological situation allows for its safe and risk-free use.
