The Functional Urban Area (FUA) Sarajevo – comprising the City of Sarajevo, Sarajevo Canton, and City of Istočno Sarajevo – has officially been awarded the EU Mission Label 🏅, joining a group of 106 European cities recognised for their leadership in the transition towards climate neutrality. Together with Elbasan, FUA Sarajevo is among the first in the Western Balkans to receive this prestigious recognition.

The EU Mission Label confirms that Sarajevo’s Climate City Contract is ambitious, credible, and ready for implementation, demonstrating strong governance, innovation capacity, and long-term commitment to climate-neutral development.

Sarajevo’s approach was particularly recognized for embedding democratic participation at the core of climate action, including the use of citizen assemblies, the development of energy communities, and programs designed to protect vulnerable households during the green transition.

With the EU Mission Label, the City of Sarajevo gains access to tailored technical and financial support, including cooperation with the European Investment Bank and the Climate City Capital Hub, enabling the transformation of climate and innovation strategies into concrete, bankable projects.

This milestone reinforces Sarajevo’s role as a regional frontrunner in sustainable urban development and reflects the joint commitment of the City of Sarajevo and the Government of Sarajevo Canton to achieving European climate goals.
