The new bike path in Vienna will be almost seven kilometers long and will connect the Donaustadt district with the city center itself. Over four meters wide, a two-way trail, intended for long distances, will be built in the Austrian capital. The beginning of the works is planned for the fall of this year, and during the development of the plan, civic participation is also expected.
The quality of cycling on this trail should be equal to the riding conditions on trails intended for long distances. Due to its construction, one of the lanes for motorized traffic will be removed on that route. Namely, the route leads from Kagraner Platz to the Aspernbrücke bridge. The middle part of the streets will be adorned with attractive lawns and bushes. In addition, squares along the trail, such as Nestroyplatz and Rosl-Berndt-Platz, will be redecorated and greened.
Cycling in Vienna is constantly growing. In 2021, the largest number of Viennese residents on bicycles was recorded, ie almost 9.3 million rides. As a result, bicycle traffic increased by almost 13 percent compared to 2019. The network of cycling counting stations in the Austrian capital provides information on the number and type of routes that Viennese prefer to cross. It turned out that more and more residents use bicycles for short distances when performing daily duties, and with a long trail, they will be able to cover longer distances in this way.
