City of Sarajevo
The City of Sarajevo is the administrative, cultural, and political capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a recognized leader among local governments in the Western Balkans for the successful implementation of internationally funded development projects. The City actively fosters inclusive, sustainable, and resilient urban development by aligning local priorities with European and global objectives. Through strong partnerships, strategic planning, and innovative project management, Sarajevo continuously strengthens its position as a credible and dynamic partner in regional and EU-funded cooperation frameworks.
Department for Sustainable Development
The Department for Sustainable Development of the City of Sarajevo serves as the central coordinating unit for planning and implementing projects in the fields of urban sustainability, environmental protection, mobility, innovation, citizen participation, and smart city initiatives. The Department plays a crucial role in securing external funding—primarily from EU and international sources—and translating these resources into impactful local initiatives.
In recent years, the Department has led or co-implemented over 25 projects worth more than 20 million BAM. These include initiatives such as urban mobility improvement through the TRIBUTE project, nature-based solutions within the Connecting Nature and BiodiverCity projects, energy-efficient transport for vulnerable groups, and the organization of Sarajevo’s Climate Citizens’ Assembly participatory process aligned with the EU Mission for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities.
The Department also manages pilot green infrastructure projects and drives local responses to global challenges such as food waste reduction, inclusive access to culture, and digital transformation.
By combining strategic vision, professional expertise, and a collaborative approach, the Department for Sustainable Development has become a reference point for innovation in local governance. Its multidisciplinary team is committed to ensuring long-term benefits for all citizens, while promoting Sarajevo as a forward-looking, inclusive, and climate-conscious European city.
