RealUrbanGreen – Testing a holistic model to co-design and co-implement healthy urban green spaces for climate-resilient cities and towns
Project duration: April 2025 – December 2027 (33 months)
Programme: Interreg Euro-MED Programme
Lead Partner: The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy (Italy)
Partner countries: Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, Greece, Spain
Total budget: €2,497,915.00 – Interreg Funds: €1,998,332.00
About the Project
REALURBANGREEN aims to improve the quality, resilience, and sustainability of Urban Green Spaces (UGS) in the face of climate change. Urban green areas are essential for reducing pollution, mitigating urban heat, preserving biodiversity, and enhancing citizens' well-being, yet they are increasingly threatened by rising temperatures, droughts, and environmental degradation.
The project will develop and test an innovative, holistic model that helps local authorities and communities co-design and co-manage healthier, greener, and more climate-resilient urban spaces. The model is based on active citizen participation, stakeholder engagement, and scientific knowledge, and will be validated in eight pilot sites across the Euro-Mediterranean area — including parks and gardens in cities, towns, and university campuses.
Through citizen science, participatory planning, and co-implementation of improvement actions, REALURBANGREEN promotes a new way of thinking about urban nature: not only as a space to enjoy, but as a key asset for local climate adaptation. The result will be a practical tool for municipalities to replicate and adapt to their own needs — contributing to greener and more resilient cities throughout the Mediterranean.

Sarajevo's Role in the Project
The City of Sarajevo participates in REALURBANGREEN as one of the pilot sites. Through its City Service for Sustainable Development, Sarajevo will focus on testing nature-based solutions and inclusive approaches to green space planning. Pilot activities will be implemented in selected urban green areas to explore how co-design, citizen participation, and climate adaptation measures can be integrated into local development strategies. Sarajevo’s contribution is especially important in bringing the perspective of Western Balkan cities to the shared Euro-Mediterranean effort.
